Restoring Your Breasts

Breast reconstruction is a series of procedures and techniques performed with the goal of restoring breasts that have been removed or deformed due to cancer, trauma or to birth or growth abnormalities. Breast reconstruction attempts to restore a breast that closely resembles your existing breast.

Real Patient Testimonial:  Breast Reconstruction

“I am in my mid-fifties and had had four major non-elective operations before being diagnosed with breast cancer. At my age, I have interacted with many doctors and a fair number of surgeons. I have never felt inclined to write about a doctor. Dr. Diaz is just that unusual. I could not have survived the ordeal of breast cancer without Dr. Diaz and his truly outstanding staff. They all walk this journey with you, beside you. It is my hope that you, too, will choose to make the best out of a bad diagnosis by having Dr. Diaz as your breast reconstruction surgeon.”

Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your experience may vary.

What to Expect

Breast reconstruction involves many different procedures usually performed in phases. These may require the use of a temporary breast implant that stretches skin (called an “expander”) or the relocation of some of your body’s tissue to your chest to reform a breast. A nipple may need to be recreated thereafter and is finished with the addition of color through tattooing.

The surgical plan depends on your medical history, breast examination, current breast size, shape and nipple position. Although many of the techniques used in breast reconstruction are shared with those of cosmetic breast enhancement, breast reconstruction is a much more challenging endeavor. It is this challenge that Dr. Diaz embraces as a reconstructive breast surgery specialist.

Your Recovery

After your surgery you will be given a surgical bra to wear. You may feel some discomfort for a couple of days which can be controlled with the medication prescribed by Dr. Diaz. There may be some bruising and swelling in the first few days. You will continue wearing the surgical bra for several weeks until the swelling subsides.

You can expect to be up and around in a couple of days. However, you probably should plan to be off work for about a week. You should avoid lifting or pushing heaving objects for about a month. Depending on the technique that is used in a month’s time you should be able to resume all your normal activities.
