Real Patient Testimonial:  Breast Reduction

“For many years I suffered from intense back and shoulder pain because of my large breasts. I was a double D cup size and my oversized breasts made it difficult to move around. When I met Dr. Diaz he immediately put me at ease. His kindness, compassion and understanding gave me the confidence I needed. I had my surgery and during my recovery I couldn’t believe his tender bedside manners. I wasn’t the easiest patient to deal with and yet he was so patient. He truly changed my life! I’m happier, healthier and love my new breasts. My only regret is that I didn’t have the procedure done sooner.”

Keep in mind that each patient is unique and your experience may vary.

What to Expect

Breast reduction surgery can be performed as an outpatient procedure. The surgery on average lasts 3 to 4 hours and is performed under general anesthesia.

The surgical technique depends on how much breast tissue needs to be removed and how much extra skin is present. The most common procedure involves an anchor-shaped incision that encircles the areola, extends downward, and follows the natural curve of the crease beneath the breast. In certain cases, techniques with less scarring can be employed, and will be used if possible. To reshape the breast, Dr. Diaz will remove the excess glandular tissue, fat, and skin, and he will also move the nipple and areola into their new position. In some cases, liposuction may be used to remove excess fat from the armpit area.

Your Recovery

After your breast reduction surgery, you will be given a surgical bra to wear. You may feel some discomfort for a couple of days. Dr. Diaz will prescribe medication to lessen any discomfort you may experience. Some patients report immediate relief of their back pain and increased nipple sensation. You will continue to wear the surgical bra around the clock for several weeks until the swelling and bruising subside.

You can expect to be up and around in a couple of days. However, you probably should plan to be off work for about a week. You should avoid lifting or pushing heaving objects for about a month. In a month’s time, you should be able to resume all your normal activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big do breasts have to be to get reduction surgery?

When breast size impacts a woman’s quality of life, she is likely a candidate for breast reduction.

How painful is breast reduction surgery?

A mild to moderate level of discomfort is common for the first few days after breast reduction. Prescription pain medication is usually enough to keep patients comfortable.

Can you reduce breast size without surgery?

Losing weight can make the breasts smaller; however, overly large breasts are usually related to genetics and remain out of proportion despite weight loss.

Do reduced breasts grow back?

While weight and hormonal changes after breast reduction can enlarge the breasts, most patients enjoy their results for many years.

Is a breast reduction better than a breast lift?

Neither procedure is better than the other. Breast reduction makes the breasts smaller by removing excess tissue, fat, and skin. Breast lift surgery improves breast shape by removing excess skin and tightening it around the breast tissue. Both procedures can include nipple and areola reshaping.
