A body lift often includes a combination of one or more of the following procedures:

Arm lifts reduce areas of excess fat and tighten loose skin on the arms through incisions that run along the inside of the upper arms.

What to Expect

Depending on the body lift procedure the surgery can be performed in an outpatient surgical facility or a hospital under general anesthesia. Some patients may have this procedure as an outpatient with an overnight stay in a recovery suite with the aid of a private duty nurse. Although no scar positioning can be guaranteed, Dr. Diaz will ask you to bring undergarments that ideally you would like to cover the scars with to help him design your surgery.

The surgery often can last 6 hours or longer depending on which procedures are performed. Following the surgery you will be placed in a special garment and will spend the night for observation. Most patients elect to stay an additional night for added recovery and comfort. Dr. Diaz will see you that night and the following morning, keeping a close eye for early intervention should any problem arise. The next day you will be up and about. You can expect to be discharged either that day or the following morning to complete your recovery at home.

Your Recovery

Once at home you can be up and about immediately, although it's likely you won't feel comfortable walking completely upright for about a week. Any discomfort you experience can be alleviated with the medication Dr. Diaz prescribes. Dr. Diaz will see you daily to change your dressings. The drains will be removed in the office when they are ready to come out, usually in 5 to 7 days.

In about 1 to 2 weeks you should be able to return to work, depending upon the type of work you do. You should avoid heavy lifting or pushing for 4 to 6 weeks. You should continue to wear your garment for 6 weeks. Full activity may be resumed after 6 weeks. Dr. Diaz recommends that all patients receive post-operative lymphatic massages as this speeds the resolution of swelling and can improve the final texture of your skin.
